Understood - I did get that from the post, I probably didn't make that clear; typing on a phone screen doesn't make for very elloquant replies at times :)

@Nick - I don't doubt Turnitin as a tool to be able ot detect the presence of non-original text. Interpretation of the reports has always required academic judgement. What is new is that the level of noise is such that academics need to be aware that they are not looking at matches to the original source of the work anymore.

Interesting and timely view as pressure for Turnitin to be made available is high in many of the programme committees I'm currently attending - especially from external examiners remarks. It's very likely we will be providing it soon (pending policy decisions, not technical delays), and it will be interesting to see how it is percieved when it is.

Thanks for the observations, and I agree with you. I've suspected that T doesn't always link to the original source, and so many websites contain Wikipedia information you can never be sure where the student has obtained the stuff from. I think the coursework black market must be massive now, with students selling on work. I think our only solution is to design smarter assessments, after we've hit the gin bottle of course.

Yeah, I'm not convinced that it really is him, just didn't want to mention a certain other loud mouth. But, high follower to following ratios are common among celebs...that's not the giveaway...i.e. celebs rarely engage in conversation unless they're @StephenFry. I suspect the dawkins tweet is ghosted and they just don't engage out of policy.

@jim as I said to Jude, this is about looking at the effect of plagiarism detection tools in higher education, so I don't be assigning star ratings to different software systems if that is what you are after? Hopefully the review will point you to some literature that could provide you with some background on the lessons others have learned from implementation of such systems. I'd be interested to hear your views.

@Jude I was interested in looking at 'effectiveness' in terms of trying to find evidence to show that the introduction of electronic detection had improved student awareness and implementation of good citation practice, paraphrasing and academic scholarship. Unsurprisingly there are almost no empirical studies in this area :-( I've broadened out the review otherwise it would have been very short indeed. I've included information about the testing of electronic detection systems (Weber-Wulff software reviews and other tests) and literature comparing the systems. The overall message is still the same though - you need to know what you are looking for and be able to teach students how to write well whatever tool you are thinking of using.

Great idea
I would be very interested in any outcomes, i'm in the process of trying to put together evidence to support wider adoption here at LJMU.
What's your star rating criteria?

Hi

Im displacing. Interesting to hear about how you are shaping resources / access etc using mind mapping. We are building a website on teaching international students linked to Evidence net for refs etc.... using a chronology.

Anyway, the reason for this post: My mate Janette informs me that someone at Monash has just designed and launched hios own electronic detection tool and the name of this thing?

Damocles.

How's that for a metaphor?????

As in Sword of....
Yuk
So along with investigating 'effectiveness' how about checking 'effectiveness for what?'
